Stanley Canyon Fishing came to be in 2013 after our last assignment to the US Air Force Academy. This assignment was essentially the pinnacle of my career that began in 1965 when the call of service was a thoughtful idea. If any location of assignments was preferred, this was it. We had the grandeur of the Academy grounds, the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, and numerous ponds stocked with trout.

It took only an invitation from my neighbor to drop a line or two into Ice Lake. A large reservoir and source of water for our needs on the Academy. From 1981 to 1988 my kids and I fished, found crayfish, watch beavers try to build a dam...why on a reservoir, I don’t know, and just watch the soaring bald eagles. It was an idyllic time and we grew to love the rise of the trout to our insects and lures.

Little did I know that even an earlier memory gave rise to my love of fly fishing. It began with an past tour to Hawthorne, Nevada. It was a lonely place but we had Walker Lake and again reservoirs all around us. It was at one reservoir, Black Beauty, that sparked my interest in fly fishing.

A gentleman was using the first fly rod I had ever seen. Instead of casting like I was, he was making loops over his head and landing the line on the reservoir surface. I couldn’t even see his “lure”. Well I intrigued. I walked over, introduced myself, and asked what was his method of fishing.

“It’s called fly fishing” he said. “The line is the weight behind the casting of the lure. The lure is my own tied fly, in this case a miniature white moth.” Well, needless to say, I was “hooked”. I asked what I needed to fly fish? Given his advice, my next question was, How do I learn to cast these flies? He kindly told me that you just practice. Watch my casts. I watched and watched. I thought I could do that.

Fast forward to today and I still practice. I can never get enough casting practice. And here is the clincher on why I build fly rods. My sons convinced me that I could make my own fly rods. Well, I did and finally in 2013 I decided to build them for others as well.

It’s been thirteen years and my custom rods are found all over the United States. I wanted to just stop but was asked by previous clients to build them another, another, and another.
